Description
Sunflower 'Waooh!' Seeds
A compact, bushy, heavily branching variety smothered in dozens of classic golden-yellow flowers from midsummer right through to the first frosts, pollen-free, self-supporting, and extraordinarily generous. The cutting garden sunflower that earns its name every single day.
Most sunflowers make a statement and then they're done. A towering single stem, one spectacular flower, and then the season moves on. 'Waooh!' works on an entirely different principle. At just 80–90cm tall, it puts every scrap of its energy not into height but into flowers — dozens and dozens of them, opening in succession from midsummer right through to October on a compact, bushy, self-supporting plant that needs no staking, no special treatment, and no coaxing. It simply flowers, and flowers, and flowers.
The individual blooms are classic sunflower perfection — rich golden-yellow petals radiating from a near-black central disc, around 10cm across, pollen-free, and produced in such abundance that the plant at its peak is more flower than foliage. The pollen-free quality makes 'Waooh!' particularly valuable as a cut flower: no pollen drop on table surfaces, no staining, no sneezing — just clear-stemmed, long-lasting golden blooms that condition beautifully and hold their colour in the vase for ten days or more. It is also a later-flowering variety than most sunflowers, meaning it extends the sunflower season well beyond what the taller varieties provide, still flowering vigorously in September when the rest of the range has finished.
🌿 Understanding the Plant
Helianthus annuus 'Waooh!' is a Half-Hardy Annual and the most floriferous variety in the Bishy Barnabee's sunflower range — a compact, heavily branching, pollen-free cultivar bred specifically for maximum flower production over a long season, and selected for its exceptional performance both in the garden and as a cut flower. It is the most distinct variety in the range, offering a fundamentally different growth habit and use pattern from the taller single or branching varieties.
🌻 In the Garden
Compact and self-supporting at 80–90cm — ideal for the middle of the border or a large container. The bushy, branching habit fills a space with golden flowers from July to October. No staking required. Flowers so prolifically it can be used as a temporary flowering hedge or as a bold seasonal statement in a mixed planting. Extends the sunflower season further into autumn than any other variety in the range.
💐 In the Vase
Pollen-free — no mess, no staining, no sneezing. An ideal cut flower for indoor use, particularly in homes with allergy sufferers. Vase life of 10–14 days. Multiple harvestable stems per plant throughout the season. Classic golden-yellow colouring works with virtually every other summer flower. Harvest when outer petals are fully open and condition overnight in deep water.
What 'Waooh!' Adds to the Range: The existing Bishy Barnabee's sunflower range covers the full tonal spectrum from golden pompom (Teddy Bear) through blazing bicolour (Ring of Fire), pure crimson (Red Sun), near-black velvet (Chocolate), and luminous cream (Vanilla Ice). 'Waooh!' adds something different entirely — not a new colour, but a new use pattern. Where the other varieties are statement plants producing flowers over a defined summer period, 'Waooh!' is a long-season cutting machine that keeps producing from July through to October, extending the range's usefulness deep into autumn and providing an essentially inexhaustible supply of classic golden-yellow stems throughout the season.
Pollen-Free Growing: The pollen-free characteristic of 'Waooh!' is the result of deliberate breeding selection — the anthers of the flower produce no viable pollen, meaning the central disc remains clean, dark, and visually striking without the yellow dusting that conventional sunflowers produce as they mature. This makes the flowers longer-lasting in the vase (pollen production is part of the natural ageing process of the flower), easier to arrange without mess, and suitable for use in situations where pollen-producing flowers would be problematic.
Container Growing: At 80–90cm, 'Waooh!' is the most practical sunflower in the range for large containers — a substantial pot of at least 30–40 litres filled with good-quality compost will support a productive plant through the season with regular watering and fortnightly feeding. This makes it the most accessible variety in the range for gardeners without dedicated borders.
🌱 Growing Guide
'Waooh!' is grown in the same way as the other sunflower varieties in the range, with the additional option of closer spacing to create a temporary flowering hedge effect given its compact, bushy habit.
How to Sow:
Sow indoors from late March to April in individual 7–9cm pots, one seed per pot approximately 1–2cm deep. As with all sunflowers, individual pot sowing is strongly recommended — the taproot develops quickly and resents disturbance at transplanting. Maintain a temperature of 18–22°C. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. For direct outdoor sowing in the final position, wait until after the last frost and sow from late April to May.
Transplanting:
Plant out after the last frost from late May to early June after a thorough hardening-off period. For border use, space plants 30–40cm apart — closer than the taller varieties, reflecting 'Waooh!'s compact habit. For a temporary flowering hedge effect, plant in a double staggered row at 25–30cm spacings. Full sun produces the most prolific flowering — in partial shade the plant will still flower but less abundantly. No staking required in any position.
Ongoing Care:
Water consistently during dry spells, particularly during the establishment period and when plants are in active bud formation. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser fortnightly from bud formation. Unlike the taller branching varieties where pinching encourages lateral stems, 'Waooh!' branches naturally and profusely without intervention — simply harvest stems regularly as they come into flower to encourage continuous production. The more you cut, the more it produces.
Container Growing:
Use a container of at least 30–40 litres for a productive plant. Fill with good-quality multipurpose or peat-free compost, water thoroughly at planting, and maintain consistent moisture throughout the season — containers dry out more rapidly than borders and 'Waooh!' will reduce flowering noticeably if water-stressed. Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser from July onwards.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
The classic golden-yellow of 'Waooh!' is one of the most versatile and most welcoming colours in the late summer garden — warm, cheerful, and naturally harmonious with a wide range of companions from the range:
- 🧡 Calendula 'Art Shades Mixed': The Warm Harmony. Calendula Art Shades planted in front of 'Waooh!' creates one of the most naturally satisfying warm-toned combinations in the cottage garden — the deep apricot, amber, and cream tones of the Calendula stepping up through the warm register to the rich golden-yellow of the sunflower above. The combination reads as a single, extended warm palette rather than two separate plants, and the long flowering season of both — Calendula from spring and 'Waooh!' from July — means the combination is sustained and generous for months. Both are outstanding for pollinators, and both provide an essentially endless supply of cut stems throughout the season.
- 🌼 Borage: The Blue Complementary. The electric blue of Borage stars at mid-height against the golden-yellow of 'Waooh!' is one of the most vivid and most naturally pleasing complementary contrasts in the summer garden — warm and cool, round and star-shaped, bold and delicate, each making the other appear more intense by proximity. At 80–90cm 'Waooh!' sits above the Borage at just the right height to create a layered planting of genuine depth, and the combination is as effective in a mixed vase arrangement as in the border. Both are outstanding for pollinators and both flower over a long summer season.
- 🌸 Ammi Majus: The White Cloud. A cloud of white Ammi Majus lace around the golden 'Waooh!' flowers is one of the most classic and most universally admired summer cutting garden combinations — the delicate, airy white umbels providing the perfect foil for the bold, round, golden sunflower heads. In the border the effect is of sunshine breaking through white mist; in the vase it is of warmth and freshness combined in a single, effortlessly beautiful arrangement. The pollen-free quality of 'Waooh!' means this combination is as practical as it is beautiful — no pollen to contend with in the vase, just clean golden stems and white lace.
- 🌀 Echinops 'Veitch's Blue': The Architectural Contrast. The cool, spiky, steel-blue globe heads of Echinops alongside the warm golden flowers of 'Waooh!' is a combination with deep roots in the Arts and Crafts garden tradition — warm gold and cool blue-grey, round and spiky, generous and architectural. At similar heights the two plants work as genuine border companions rather than simply background and foreground, and the contrast between the sunflower's classic open face and the Echinops's perfectly spherical globe creates a conversation of form and colour that is genuinely sophisticated. Both dry beautifully, making the combination as valuable in a dried autumn arrangement as in the living summer border.

| 🌻 Flowering |
Two things make the very most of 'Waooh!'. First, cut stems as frequently as possible — this variety is specifically bred for repeated cutting and responds to every harvest with a fresh flush of new buds within ten to fourteen days. A plant that is regularly cut will continue producing right through to the first frosts; a plant that is left uncut will peak and slow. Second, unlike the taller single-stem varieties, 'Waooh!' can be sown in two batches — one in late March for July flowers, and a second in late April for flowers from August onwards — giving you a genuinely extended cutting season with consistently fresh plants coming into peak production throughout late summer and early autumn.
🌻 The Sunflower That Never Stops
Helianthus annuus 'Waooh!' is the variety that completes the Bishy Barnabee's sunflower range — not by adding another colour, but by adding another dimension of usefulness entirely. Compact enough for containers, prolific enough to supply a cutting garden singlehandedly, pollen-free for vase use in any home, and late-flowering enough to still be producing golden stems in October when everything else has finished. Grow it alongside the taller dark-flowered varieties for a sunflower collection that spans the full spectrum from gold to crimson to cream — and from June right through to autumn.

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable.
