🌿 Understanding the Plant
Eschscholzia californica is a Hardy Annual (H3). While it completes its life cycle in one season, it is a prolific self-seeder in the UK. If you leave the long, decorative seed pods to dry and "pop" in late summer, you will likely have a permanent colony returning year after year.
The Taproot: This plant survives drought by sending down a long, carrot-like taproot. Because of this, it does not like being moved. Always sow it where you want it to stay, as transplanting usually results in the plant failing.
Pollinator Favourite: Listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, it is a fantastic source of pollen. Watch closely and you'll often see bumblebees "wrestling" with the petals as they open in the morning sun to get to the riches inside.
🌱 Growing Guide
Californian Poppies thrive on a certain amount of neglect. In fact, the poorer the soil, the better they usually flower!
How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May for summer flowers, or in August to September. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and scatter seeds thinly. Lightly rake them in or cover with just 0.5cm of soil. Germination usually takes 10-21 days.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun (the flowers will stay closed in the shade). They are perfect for gravel gardens, dry banks, or the edges of sunny paths. Important: Do not add manure or fertilizer! Rich soil makes them grow too much leaf and very few flowers.
Ongoing Care:
Thin seedlings to about 15-20cm apart to give them room to mound. Once established, they are highly drought-tolerant and rarely need watering. Remove spent flowers (deadheading) to keep the blooms coming all summer, or leave them to see the interesting "spike" seed pods form.

If you are not completely happy with any product that you have ordered from us, you may return it to us in its original condition any time within 14 calendar days from the date of dispatch.
