Silky, sun-loving blooms of radiant golden-yellow with a contrasting deep orange heart. Perched atop feathery, silver-blue foliage, these 'solar-powered' flowers bring a relaxed, drought-tolerant vibe to any sunny garden path or gravel bed.
If you have a patch of dry, poor soil where nothing seems to survive, the Californian Poppy is your saviour. 'Golden West' is a superior heritage variety that produces an abundance of silky, cup-shaped flowers in a radiant shade of golden-yellow with a contrasting deep orange heart.
The blooms sit atop mounds of finely cut, feathery, silver-blue foliage that looks beautiful all season. These flowers are "solar-powered"—they open wide to catch the sun and twist shut into elegant spirals in the evening or on cloudy days. It brings a relaxed vibe to the British garden and is virtually impossible to kill.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Eschscholzia californica is a Hardy Annual (H3). While it completes its life cycle in one season, it is a prolific self-seeder in the UK. If you leave the long, decorative seed pods to dry and "pop" in late summer, you will likely have a permanent colony returning year after year.
The Taproot: This plant survives drought by sending down a long, carrot-like taproot. Because of this, it does not like being moved. Always sow it where you want it to stay, as transplanting usually results in the plant failing.
Pollinator Favourite: Listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, it is a fantastic source of pollen. Watch closely and you'll often see bumblebees "wrestling" with the petals as they open in the morning sun to get to the riches inside.
🌱 Growing Guide
Californian Poppies thrive on a certain amount of neglect. In fact, the poorer the soil, the better they usually flower!
How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May for summer flowers, or in August to September. Rake the soil to a fine tilth and scatter seeds thinly. Lightly rake them in or cover with just 0.5cm of soil. Germination usually takes 10-21 days.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun (the flowers will stay closed in the shade). They are perfect for gravel gardens, dry banks, or the edges of sunny paths. Important: Do not add manure or fertilizer! Rich soil makes them grow too much leaf and very few flowers.
Ongoing Care:
Thin seedlings to about 15-20cm apart to give them room to mound. Once established, they are highly drought-tolerant and rarely need watering. Remove spent flowers (deadheading) to keep the blooms coming all summer, or leave them to see the interesting "spike" seed pods form.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
The intense golden-orange of 'Golden West' looks spectacular when paired with cool blues or contrasting textures:
- 🔵 Cornflower 'Blue Ball': The Vibrant Clash. Blue and Orange sit opposite each other on the colour wheel. Planting blue Cornflowers behind these poppies creates an electric, buzzing display.
- ☁️ Nigella 'Miss Jekyll Blue': The Foliage Match. Both plants share beautiful, feathery foliage. Growing them together creates a misty, textured "cloud" in your border.
📅 Sowing & Flowering Calendar
Sow in spring for summer colour, or autumn for an earlier start the following year.
⚠️ Transplant Warning
Californian Poppies have deep, sensitive roots. They generally die if you try to dig them up and move them. Always sow them exactly where you want them to flower!
🏆 RHS Plants for Pollinators
Eschscholzia californica is listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list. Its open, saucer-shaped blooms provide easily accessible, high-protein pollen that is a vital resource for bees during the summer months.

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
