Description
Cosmos 'Daydream' Seeds
An exquisite bicolour variety with white petals that melt into soft blush-pink centres. These hand-painted blooms appear weeks ahead of other types, providing a tireless supply of long-stemmed flowers.
Imagine a Cosmos so delicate, so ethereally beautiful, it looks like it belongs in a watercolour painting rather than a real garden. 'Daydream' is one of the most exquisite modern Cosmos hybrids—a stunning bicolour variety that starts as pure white around the petal edges and gradually melts into soft blush pink towards the centre, creating an ombré effect that's utterly enchanting.
Standing on the classic airy, ferny foliage, these daisy-like blooms feature a distinctive "halo" of darker pink around the central golden disc, making each flower look like it has been hand-painted. 'Daydream' is particularly prized because it flowers much earlier than standard types—often blooming just weeks after planting out. It is a tireless flower factory, providing a non-stop supply of romantic, long-stemmed blooms for bouquets from June until the very first frosts of November.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Cosmos bipinnatus 'Daydream' is a robust Half-Hardy Annual (H2). Native to the sun-baked grasslands of Mexico, it is biologically programmed to thrive in full sun and surprisingly lean soil. This specific cultivar is celebrated for its extra-early flowering habit, typically reaching maturity and blooming just 7-8 weeks from sowing—roughly a month ahead of heritage varieties.
The "Starvation" Rule: One of the most important aspects of Cosmos biology is its dislike of rich soil. If grown in manured ground or treated with nitrogen-heavy fertilizers, the plant will produce massive green foliage but often fail to flower. For the best ombré display, plant them in poor, dry, or sandy soil and avoid feeding entirely.
Architectural Depth: At a height of 90-150cm, 'Daydream' sits in the horticultural "Goldilocks zone." It is tall enough to provide structural vertical interest at the back of a border and produce long stems for the vase, yet sturdy enough to resist toppling in typical UK summer conditions if pinched early.
🌱 Growing Guide
Cosmos is one of the easiest and fastest plants to raise from seed, making it a perfect project for beginners or children.
How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to May for the earliest possible blooms, or direct sow outdoors in May or June once the soil has warmed. Sow seeds 5mm deep into moist seed compost. Germination is exceptionally rapid, typically occurring within 5-10 days at a constant temperature of 18-20°C. If sowing indoors, no specialized heat mat is required; a bright windowsill is perfect.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and thrive in poor, well-drained soil. They are the ideal solution for filling large gaps in a border or for establishing an instant, high-volume bicolour cutting garden. Space plants 45cm apart to allow their airy, architectural framework to develop fully without overcrowding.
Ongoing Care:
To encourage a sturdy, multi-stemmed plant, pinching is essential. When seedlings reach 15-20cm tall, pinch out the top growing tip; this prevents the plant from becoming too "top-heavy" and toppling over in late summer rain. Weekly deadheading is also vital—never let the flowers go to seed if you want them to continue blooming until the first November frosts.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
The soft, white-to-pink bicolour of 'Daydream' acts as a versatile "blender" that works spectacularly with partners from our range:
- 🦋 Cornflower 'Blue Ball': The Classic Romance. The electric blue pom-pom heads of 'Blue Ball' provide a stunning complementary contrast to the soft pink tones of 'Daydream'. Both thrive in poor soil and share an early summer flowering window, creating a vibrant, pollinator-heavy display.
- ☁️ Ammi majus: The Texture Match. The lacy white umbels of Ammi majus (Bishop's Flower) provide a soft, airy backdrop that allows the delicate pink etching of 'Daydream' to truly shine. Together, they create a dreamy, "wild meadow" look that is a favourite for informal summer bouquets.
📅 Sowing & Flowering Calendar
Sow indoors in spring or direct sow once the soil warms for an unstoppable harvest of watercolour-pink blooms from early summer until the autumn frosts.
✨ Vase Life Tip
Cosmos are a true "cut-and-come-again" flower. For the longest vase life of 7-10 days, harvest the stems in the early morning when the buds are just beginning to open their petals, and always strip the lower feathery foliage to keep the water clean.
🏆 Top-Tier Pollinator Plant
Known for its stamina and ability to thrive in full sun, Cosmos bipinnatus 'Daydream' is an essential choice for those wanting to create a romantic, low-maintenance garden that provides non-stop bicolour blooms weeks ahead of other varieties.

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
