Description

Chervil Seeds

A sophisticated French 'fines herbes' essential with a subtle aniseed flavour. This lacy, fern-like herb thrives in cool, shady spots where other herbs struggle.

If you enjoy cooking French cuisine, Chervil is non-negotiable. One of the four classic fines herbes (along with Tarragon, Parsley, and Chives), it looks like a ferny parsley but possesses a subtle, sophisticated flavour of aniseed and mild liquorice.

It is famously difficult to find in shops because the delicate leaves wilt moments after harvesting. The only way to enjoy it is to grow it yourself and pick it seconds before serving. It is a fantastic choice for shady gardens, as it thrives in cool corners where other sun-loving herbs would struggle.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Anthriscus cerefolium is a fast-growing Hardy Annual (H3). It is a "cool-season" crop; unlike heat-loving herbs such as basil, Chervil requires lower temperatures to thrive. If exposed to intense mid-summer heat or dry conditions, the delicate foliage will turn purple and the plant will "bolt" (run to seed) almost immediately.

The "Successional" Rule: Because Chervil has a rapid and short life cycle, we recommend against sowing the entire packet at once. For a constant culinary supply, sow a small batch every 3-4 weeks. This strategy ensures a steady harvest of tender, anise-flavoured leaves from spring through to late autumn.

Decorative Edging: Beyond its culinary value, Chervil is highly ornamental. Its pale green, lacy, fern-like leaves provide a delicate texture that makes it an excellent decorative edging plant for shady borders or woodland-style kitchen gardens.

🌱 Growing Guide

Chervil possesses a long, sensitive taproot and highly resents being moved; for this reason, direct sowing is the most reliable method for success.

How to Sow:
Direct sow outdoors from March to August. For winter harvests, sow in a greenhouse or cold frame in September. Scatter seeds thinly into drills approximately 1cm deep. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days. If sowing in containers, ensure they are deep enough to accommodate the taproot.

Where to Plant:
They demand partial shade and thrive in cool, moisture-retentive soil. During the height of summer, position Chervil behind taller crops or on the north-facing side of a fence to shield it from the midday sun. Consistent moisture is vital; if the soil dries out, the plant will bolt prematurely.

Ongoing Care:
Regular harvesting of the outer leaves will encourage the plant to continue producing fresh growth from the centre. For the best flavour, leaves should be used raw or added to cooked dishes at the very last second, as heat quickly destroys the subtle aniseed volatile oils.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Companions

Chervil is the perfect "understorey" plant for the shady vegetable patch. Pair it with these available partners from our range:

  • 🥬 Lettuce & Salad Leaves: The Cool Club. Both Chervil and lettuce thrive in shady, moist corners and share a deep dislike for summer heat. Planting them together creates a lush, green edible carpet where the ferny Chervil foliage provides a beautiful textured backdrop to lettuce rosettes.
  • 🌿 Parsley: The Ferny Cousins. Often called "French Parsley," Chervil shares similar cultural requirements with Flat Leaf Parsley. Together they form a robust, low-maintenance herb bed for partial shade, providing the essential backbone for professional French cooking.

✨ Culinary Tip
Chervil adds a subtle "je ne sais quoi" to dishes. Its delicate flavour is easily lost by heat, so always stir it into omelettes or sauces at the very last second, or use it raw as a sophisticated garnish for fish dishes.

🏆 Robust Shade Stamina

Known for its stamina and ability to thrive in cool, shady corners, Anthriscus cerefolium is an essential choice for those wanting to create a productive, low-maintenance herb garden that provides professional-grade flavour throughout the year.

Be a smarter gardener

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.

Slow release for sustained growth

Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.

Love your land

The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.

Embrace sustainability

Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
