Augusts Garden on Instagram

When did you start?

How much knowledge of gardening did you have when you started?
Absolutely none, I was that person that said ‘ I kill every plant I touch ‘

Was gardening a thing in your household when you were growing up?
Not really, I remember my mum doing a little bit but we never grew food.

Who else gets involved with your plot? Is it a family affair?
My two girls Posie and Winnie ages 5 and 7

Where do you get inspiration and gardening advice from?
I get lots of inspiration from the Instagram community, books and also the beautiful gardens of Le Manoir where I work.

What are you planning to grow this season?
We always grow lots of salad and herbs, tomatoes, oodles of different squash, beetroot turnips and edible flowers.

How does gardening have an affect on your lifestyle?
It has completely changed our life. I went from a career of 20 years as an air hostess doing a job I loved until I found my passion for gardening.

I’m now the Gardening tutor of the Raymond Blanc Gardening School, I also teach kids gardening at a primary school, building a healthy relationship with food. I have also created a kids Seed Line the Seed Explorers, bringing to life some of my vegetable friends with a little sprinkle of garden magic to inspire our future generations to grow their own food.

What do you find most challenging in your garden?
Not having enough time.

What has been your greatest success?
Seeing the smile on the face of every Seed Explorer when they pick their first homegrown treasures.

Any big growing challenges you plan to take on in the future?
I am writing a story/gardening book for children this winter.

Three top tips you would give someone starting out?

  1. Never give up, every fail has a lesson to teach for the future.
  2. Everyone has a different methods, there is no right or wrong way, just what’s best for you.
  3. Grow things you love to eat.
