Poppy 'Hungarian Blue' Seeds
Spectacular violet-purple blooms set against elegant silver-blue foliage. This traditional heirloom is the definitive 'breadseed' poppy, prized for its large architectural pods and bountiful harvest of nutty, edible slate-blue seeds.
'Hungarian Blue' is a spectacular dual-purpose heirloom variety of breadseed poppy. In early summer, it produces tall, elegant stems topped with large, single, bowl-shaped flowers in a rich shade of violet-purple with a distinctive dark smudge at the base. They create a stunning wash of colour against their silver-blue (glaucous) foliage.
This variety is loved not just for its beauty but for its bountiful harvest of slate-blue edible seeds, which are the standard for European baking. Once the petals drop, the plant leaves behind large, decorative seed pods that can be used in dried arrangements or left in the garden for winter structure.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Papaver somniferum 'Hungarian Blue' is a Very Hardy Annual (H7). It completes its entire life cycle in a single season but is incredibly resilient, surviving even the harshest UK winter frosts as a young seedling.
The Harvest: Unlike other flowers where deadheading is required, with this variety, you want the seed heads! Leave the pods on the plant until they turn brown and brittle and you can hear the seeds rattling inside like a maraca.
Heirloom Quality: Selected over generations in Central Europe, this cultivar is the definitive variety for "breadseed" production, prized for the nutty, slate-blue seeds essential for traditional baking.
🌱 Growing Guide
Poppies are remarkably easy to grow if given full sun and sharp drainage, but they categorically hate being transplanted.
How to Sow:
Always direct sow where you want them to flower. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of raked soil in Autumn (Sept-Oct) for the largest plants, or in Spring (March-May). Press the seeds down gently but do not cover them—they require light to trigger germination.
Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and thrive in sandy, gritty, or chalky ground. Avoid rich, heavily manured soil; lean soil encourages a robust habit that won't flop under the weight of the pods.
Ongoing Care:
Thinning is vital. Once seedlings reach 5cm tall, you must thin them to 25-30cm apart. If left crowded, the plants will be small and fail to produce the large seed pods wanted for baking. Water well until established; thereafter, they are very drought-tolerant.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
The rich violet flowers and silver foliage of 'Hungarian Blue' work beautifully with these partners:
- 🔥 Calendula 'Neon': The Colour Pop. The intense orange of 'Neon' vibrates against the violet-purple of the poppy. It's a high-energy combination that looks fantastic in a productive kitchen garden.
- ❄️ Ammi Majus (Queen Anne's Lace): The Texture Balance. The soft, white lace of Ammi provides a frothy background for the solid poppy flowers. Later in the season, their dried seed heads look incredible together.
📅 Sowing & Flowering Calendar
Sow in autumn or spring for violet blooms and architectural "pepper pot" seed heads.
🐝 Pollinator Paradise
The single open flowers of 'Hungarian Blue' are excellent for pollinators. They produce abundant pollen which is easily accessible to bumblebees and honeybees.
⚠️ Toxicity Warning
All plant parts except the seeds are toxic. Green pods contain poisonous alkaloids and are highly toxic if ingested.

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable.
