Description

China Aster 'Peony Mix' Seeds

Asters are extroverts—bright, carefree, and bursting with vitality! This gorgeous 'Peony Mix' variety produces huge, fully double, pom-pom-like blooms that look exactly like small peonies, with masses of incurved petals creating a luscious, luxurious flower head that's absolutely impossible to ignore. The mix delivers a dazzling colour range including deep purples, vibrant pinks, soft lavenders, and pure whites—all with that distinctive chrysanthemum-like incurved petal structure that gives them such an opulent, showstopping appearance.

Growing to approximately 60cm tall on strong, upright stems, these are exceptional cut flowers with an astonishing vase life of up to 10 days in a cool room—far longer than most annuals! Blooming from mid-summer right through to the first hard frosts (August to October), they arrive just when the rest of the garden is starting to tire, providing a fresh burst of late-season colour and energy. China Asters thrive in full sun and are remarkably easy to grow once you get them started. These stunning flowers are like sunshine personified—bold, cheerful, and absolutely brilliant for bringing masses of vibrant colour to borders, cutting gardens, and bouquets. The RHS Plants for Pollinators recognition confirms they're also brilliant for feeding bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects during that crucial late-summer period when many other flowers have finished.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Callistephus chinensis 'Peony Mix' is a robust Half-Hardy Annual (H2). Unlike perennial Michaelmas Daisies, China Asters are raised from seed each year to provide a fresh, disease-free peak late-summer display. The 'Peony' type is specifically bred for its incurved morphology, where the petals curve inward and upward to completely obscure the central yellow disk, resulting in a structural pom-pom aesthetic.

The "Miniature Peony" Structure: The opulent appearance is a botanical trait: the ray florets are densely packed and exhibit a strong incurved growth habit. This results in large (8-10cm) blooms that possess the volume and presence of a peony but with the high-production capacity of an annual bedding plant.

Wilt Resistance Strategy: China Asters are susceptible to Aster Wilt (Fusarium). To ensure horticultural success, always practice crop rotation: avoid planting Asters in the exact same soil for two consecutive years. This simple biological management strategy significantly reduces soil-borne pathogen levels and ensures your 'Peony Mix' remains vigorous and productive.

🌱 Growing Guide

China Asters require consistent warmth to break dormancy and must be protected from all frost until the summer months.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from March to April. Surface sow the seeds onto moist seed compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling (3-5mm) of vermiculite; China Asters require moisture-retentive covering but must not be buried deeply. Maintain a constant temperature of 18-21°C. Germination is reliable, typically occurring within 10-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun to reach their peak flowering potential and thrive in rich, fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, incorporate well-rotted organic matter to provide the high nutrient levels required for such substantial heads. Space plants 30-40cm apart to ensure optimal air circulation—this is a critical preventative measure against fungal diseases. Only plant out in late May or June once all risk of frost has passed.

Ongoing Care:
The heads of 'Peony Mix' are heavy and require sturdy support. In windy gardens, horizontal support netting (installed when plants are 20cm tall) or bamboo canes are essential to ensure poker-straight stems for the vase. Regular picking of stems—or diligent deadheading—prevents the plant from setting seed and signals it to continue producing fresh, peony-like buds until the first hard frosts of autumn.

Be a smarter gardener

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.

Slow release for sustained growth

Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.

Love your land

The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.

Embrace sustainability

Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
