Description
Greek Oregano Seeds
While the common wild oregano looks pretty, it often lacks punch. This 'Greek' strain is the authentic culinary variety—the one with the intense, spicy, peppery flavour that defines a good pizza sauce or a Greek salad.
This is a plant that thrives on neglect. In fact, the hotter and drier the weather, the more intense the flavour becomes. It forms a low, spreading mound of hairy, dark green leaves topped with tiny white flowers that are an absolute magnet for bees. It is hardy, reliable, and essential for any cook's garden.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Greek Oregano is a Hardy Perennial.
It comes back year after year, forming a woody base over time. It keeps its leaves in mild winters but may die back to the ground in very cold weather.
The Flavour Secret: Unlike many herbs that need water, Oregano develops its best essential oils when grown "hard"—in poor soil with plenty of sun. Don't pamper it!
Top Tip: Harvest it *before* the flowers open for the strongest leaf flavour. However, if you leave the flowers, the bees will thank you!
🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow
Oregano seeds are tiny (like dust), so handle them carefully indoors.
Germination:
Sow indoors from February to May. Scatter the seeds on the surface of moist, free-draining compost. Do not cover them (or use a very light dusting of vermiculite), as they need light to germinate. Keep warm (15-20°C). Germination takes 7-14 days.
Where to Sow:
It demands full sun and **sharp drainage**. It hates winter wet. If you have heavy clay soil, grow it in a terracotta pot with plenty of grit mixed in, or on top of a rockery.
Care While Growing:
Do not feed it! Fertiliser makes the leaves lush but flavorless. Cut the plant back hard after flowering to keep it into a neat, tight mound, otherwise, it can get straggly.

🤝 Perfect Garden Companions
Oregano is a classic Mediterranean herb that loves hot, dry company:
- 🧅 Chives: The Kitchen Essential. Plant them side-by-side in a trough or window box. The upright, grassy leaves of the Chives contrast beautifully with the spreading, mat-forming Oregano.
- 💜 Lavender 'Munstead': The Scented Path. Use Oregano to underplant taller Lavender bushes. They both release incredible scent when brushed against, making them perfect for lining a sunny path.
📅 Sowing & Harvesting Calendar
Sow indoors in spring. Harvest leaves year-round (drying them for winter).

Oregano flavour gets stronger when dried! Harvest stems in late summer, hang them in a dry place, and crumble the leaves into jars. It will keep its punch all winter.

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
