Antirrhinum majus 'Crown Mixed' is technically a Half-Hardy Annual (H3), though botanically it's actually a short-lived perennial that we treat as an annual in the UK climate.

This is a modern, open-pollinated variety that's been specifically bred for what plant breeders call an "intermediate" or "semi-dwarf" habit—tall enough to make a proper impact in the border but compact enough not to need staking. It retains the absolutely classic "snapping dragon's mouth" mechanism that insects adore, but holds those flowers on shorter, stockier stems than the traditional tall cutting varieties you might remember from your grandmother's garden.

Improved Disease Resistance: The 'Crown' series generally shows excellent field resistance to snapdragon rust (a common fungal disease that causes orange-brown spots on the leaves). This means the foliage stays greener and healthier for much longer into autumn, extending the flowering season significantly.

The Fascinating "Snap": The name "Antirrhinum" literally means "like a snout" in Greek, referring to the flower's resemblance to an animal's nose. Children love gently squeezing the sides of the flower to make the dragon's mouth "snap" open and shut—it's genuinely entertaining!

Snapdragon seeds are absolutely tiny—almost dust-like—so handle them carefully and use quality seed compost.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to April for flowers from June onwards. This is crucial: surface sow the seeds onto moist compost and do not cover them—they absolutely need light to germinate successfully. Just press them down very gently with your hand to ensure contact with the compost. Keep the tray warm (around 20-22°C ideally) and place it on a bright windowsill but out of direct scorching sun. Germination usually takes 10-14 days, sometimes up to 21 days if conditions aren't quite perfect.

Planting Out:
Wait until after the last frost danger has passed (usually mid-late May in most of the UK) before planting out your seedlings. Antirrhinum loves full sun—it simply won't flower well in shade. Thanks to their naturally bushy habit, they're absolutely excellent for mass planting in traditional bedding schemes or for completely filling large containers on patios.

The Professional Pinching Trick:
Even though 'Crown Mixed' is already a naturally branching variety, you can make it even bushier by pinching out the growing tip when plants reach about 10cm tall. Use your fingernails to nip out just the very top growing point. This temporarily delays flowering by a week or two, but the plant responds by producing multiple side shoots, giving you many more flower spikes overall—well worth the small wait!

Ongoing Care:
Once established and flowering, Antirrhinum is genuinely low-maintenance. Regular deadheading (removing faded flowers) encourages continuous blooming right through until the first hard frosts. They're reasonably drought-tolerant once established, though they'll perform better with occasional watering during very dry spells.
