Description
Antirrhinum 'Crown Mixed' Seeds
Finding exactly the right height for a successful border can be surprisingly tricky: dwarf snapdragons tend to get lost amongst other plants, while the giant cutting varieties need endless staking and often flop over in summer storms. 'Crown Mixed' hits the absolute sweet spot—it grows to a perfect, bushy 45cm, creating generous mounds of vibrant colour that support themselves beautifully without any help whatsoever.
This cheerful mix creates an absolute carnival of cottage garden colour, producing dense flower spikes in vivid shades of scarlet red, hot pink, sunshine yellow, pure white, and deep purple. Because it branches so freely from the base, it creates a wonderful "flowering hedge" effect rather than just producing single stems. It's remarkably robust and weather-resistant, making it absolutely perfect for filling the middle tiers of mixed borders or for stuffing into large patio containers for a genuinely long-lasting summer display that just keeps on giving.

🌿 Understanding the Plant
Antirrhinum majus 'Crown Mixed' is technically a Half-Hardy Annual (H3), though botanically it's actually a short-lived perennial that we treat as an annual in the UK climate.
This is a modern, open-pollinated variety that's been specifically bred for what plant breeders call an "intermediate" or "semi-dwarf" habit—tall enough to make a proper impact in the border but compact enough not to need staking. It retains the absolutely classic "snapping dragon's mouth" mechanism that insects adore, but holds those flowers on shorter, stockier stems than the traditional tall cutting varieties you might remember from your grandmother's garden.
Improved Disease Resistance: The 'Crown' series generally shows excellent field resistance to snapdragon rust (a common fungal disease that causes orange-brown spots on the leaves). This means the foliage stays greener and healthier for much longer into autumn, extending the flowering season significantly.
The Fascinating "Snap": The name "Antirrhinum" literally means "like a snout" in Greek, referring to the flower's resemblance to an animal's nose. Children love gently squeezing the sides of the flower to make the dragon's mouth "snap" open and shut—it's genuinely entertaining!
🌱 Growing Guide
Snapdragon seeds are absolutely tiny—almost dust-like—so handle them carefully and use quality seed compost.
How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to April for flowers from June onwards. This is crucial: surface sow the seeds onto moist compost and do not cover them—they absolutely need light to germinate successfully. Just press them down very gently with your hand to ensure contact with the compost. Keep the tray warm (around 20-22°C ideally) and place it on a bright windowsill but out of direct scorching sun. Germination usually takes 10-14 days, sometimes up to 21 days if conditions aren't quite perfect.
Planting Out:
Wait until after the last frost danger has passed (usually mid-late May in most of the UK) before planting out your seedlings. Antirrhinum loves full sun—it simply won't flower well in shade. Thanks to their naturally bushy habit, they're absolutely excellent for mass planting in traditional bedding schemes or for completely filling large containers on patios.
The Professional Pinching Trick:
Even though 'Crown Mixed' is already a naturally branching variety, you can make it even bushier by pinching out the growing tip when plants reach about 10cm tall. Use your fingernails to nip out just the very top growing point. This temporarily delays flowering by a week or two, but the plant responds by producing multiple side shoots, giving you many more flower spikes overall—well worth the small wait!
Ongoing Care:
Once established and flowering, Antirrhinum is genuinely low-maintenance. Regular deadheading (removing faded flowers) encourages continuous blooming right through until the first hard frosts. They're reasonably drought-tolerant once established, though they'll perform better with occasional watering during very dry spells.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations
'Crown Mixed' is robust and colourful enough to hold its own in even the busiest summer border:
- 🌙 Nicotiana sylvestris: The day-and-night dream team! Plant the towering, white-flowered Nicotiana behind your Snapdragons to create a stunning layered effect. During the day, you'll enjoy the carnival colours of the Snapdragons in full sunshine, then as evening falls, the tall Nicotiana opens its tubular white flowers and releases the most incredible sweet fragrance that fills the entire garden. It's the perfect pairing for both visual impact and sensory delight.
- ☁️ Cosmos 'Sensation Mixed': A delightful textural contrast. The solid, upright flower spikes of Snapdragons create a wonderful counterpoint to the floaty, feathery foliage and open daisy flowers of Cosmos. Both flower continuously throughout summer and share a love of full sun, making this combination both beautiful and incredibly easy to maintain.
📅 Sowing & Flowering Calendar
Sow indoors from late winter through spring. Flowers all summer until first frost.
👨👩👧👦 Entertainment Value for Children!
Snapdragons are the ultimate interactive flower and absolutely brilliant fun for children. Gently squeeze the sides of any flower to make the dragon's mouth "snap" open and shut—it's genuinely entertaining and never gets old! This alone makes Antirrhinum an absolutely essential plant if you're gardening with grandchildren or young ones.
🏆 RHS Plants for Pollinators
Antirrhinum is proudly listed on the RHS Plants for Pollinators register, recognizing its exceptional value for supporting pollinating insects. The complex flower structure is specifically designed for heavy insects like bumblebees, who are the only pollinators strong enough to force the petals open to reach the nectar inside. Watching a fat bumblebee wrestling its way into the flower, then backing out covered head-to-toe in pollen, is one of summer's great wildlife spectacles!

Gardening organically is a more affordable and long term alternative to using chemical fertilisers. Natural Grower products eliminate waste because the nutrients are slowly released to the plants as they need them. Over the long-term you save money because your soil health naturally improves, which in turn produces healthier, stronger, disease resistant plants. Chemical products may cost less financially in the short term, but they don’t provide any long-term benefits and the damage they do to the natural eco-system in the soil is costly.
Slow release for sustained growth
Organic fertilisers are broken down slowly by organisms in the soil to produce a more measured, consistent, natural release of nutrients. This results in uniform growth with strong stems and leaves, unlike chemical fertilisers which provide a sudden boost resulting in tall lanky plants. Stronger plants are more resistant to disease, and with the presence of mycorrizhal fungi to strengthen the roots, the plants, soil and fungi all work together long-term to create the perfect natural eco-system.
Love your land
The organic matter in Natural Grower will help keep your soil or compost in optimum condition, retain moisture over the dry summer months and improve the health and structure of your soil. The presence of natural Mycorrhizal fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost. By using our products you will be supporting and enhancing the natural eco-system in the soil.
Embrace sustainability
Natural Grower’s chemical free fertiliser products are approved organic, biodynamic and vegan. Plant-based and free from chemicals they are safe to use around wildlife, pets and children. Eco-friendly and sustainably produced in the UK. Our packaging is made from recycled plastic where possible and is all 100% recyclable. We are always happy to refill used containers, and often sell our products in reused containers or slightly damaged packaging at a reduced price. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
