Watering, Weeding, Pest Control and Feeding
Through the hotter summer months, watering continues to be a time-consuming task for us gardeners. The weeds are prolific, and pests love the heat too, so both need constant monitoring.
Feeding plants is obviously a must, and we recommend doing so on the same day each week. We love #feedingfriday when Charlotte and some of the NG Ambassadors share feeding tips on their social channels. Follow @natural_grower on Instagram and @NaturalGrower on Facebook for more on Feeding Fridays.
Many notice how the organic matter in Natural Grower soil conditioner helps soil retain moisture over the dry summer months. The presence of natural fungi in our products enhances root growth, enabling plants to extract nutrients and absorb water more efficiently from the soil or compost.
Here are some ways to optimize watering with some waterwise tips thrown in that we hope you find useful reminders:
Optimize Garden Watering
- Hanging baskets and planter pots can be incredibly thirsty as they have the tendency to dry out quickly.
- Remember that you can also apply a layer of mulch around plants and in garden beds which helps retain moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
- Using a watering can instead of a hose reduces water wastage.
- Do what you can to channel all rainwater into a water butt which gives you a constant water supply during drier summer days. Water butts come into their own when hosepipe bans are enforced.
- Consider collecting and reusing greywater for garden irrigation from showers, baths, and washing machines.
- Using the water after cooking vegetables or pasta to feed plants gives them a stable and steady growth period.
- Boiled and cooled water is free of most pollutants so it is great for both houseplants and garden plants; it helps reduce salt build-up in the soil, which naturally occurs with regular watering.
- You can also use water from boiling eggs which is full of calcium.
